Water Infrastructure Opportunities, Policy, Legal, and Regulatory Environment in Kenya
Today, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, participated in a high-level panel discussion on Water Infrastructure Opportunities, Policy, Legal, and Regulatory Environment in Kenya.
The discussion took place on the sidelines of the Trade Mission on Sustainable Agriculture and Water to Kenya, which was hosted by the State Department for Investment in collaboration with the Netherlands in Nairobi
The discussion centered around the mission's theme: "Water Sector Infrastructure and Business Opportunities, Policy, Legal, and Regulatory Environment in Kenya and Its Nexus with the Dutch Water Sector."
PS Kimotho highlighted opportunities for investing in the irrigation sector in Kenya under the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan (NISIP) 2025 - 2035. The primary goal of NISIP is to establish and operationalize a well-coordinated investment and financing framework for the irrigation sector.
Among its five strategic pathways, NISIP provides:
* Opportunities for Corporate Agribusiness and Public Financing: Aimed at bridging funding viability gaps.
* Expanded Farmer-Led Irrigation: Facilitating large-scale irrigation expansion.
* High-Performing Public Schemes: Enhancing service delivery in existing public irrigation projects.
* Revitalization of Irrigation in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs): Ensuring food and fodder production for vulnerable pastoralist communities through water harvesting from seasonal rivers (laggas).
* Maximized Community Scheme Benefits: Strengthening community-based irrigation governance, ensuring sustainability, and developing new community projects.
The State Department for Irrigation remains committed to fostering partnerships with development stakeholders to achieve its sectoral goals and enhance sustainable water and irrigation infrastructure.
