Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the County Government of Mandera

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho Kimani - PS, today held a consultative meeting with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the County Government of Mandera, led by H.E. Dr. Ali Maalim Mohamud, who headed a high level delegation to discuss the Daua River Irrigation Masterplan at Maji House.
The Daua River Irrigation Masterplan is part of the Government’s strategic priority on the development of 50 mega water and irrigation projects. The Masterplan envisions the development of dams and water storage infrastructure to support irrigation and domestic water supply for up to 120,000 acres across Kenya and Ethiopia, thereby enhancing resilience to climate change, improving food security, and stimulating cross border economic activity particularly as the Suftu One Stop Border Post and the proposed Daua River bridge.
The Masterplan places strong emphasis on expanded water storage, modern irrigation systems, and climate resilient livelihoods for pastoral and agro pastoral households along the ASAL frontier. Once implemented, the initiative is expected to significantly boost agricultural productivity, strengthen local value chains, and foster sustainable economic development across the region.
Both State Department for Irrigation and IGAd has agreed to initiate inter departmental consultations with relevant government agencies to ensure a coordinated, timely, and effective rollout of the program, in line with national development priorities and regional cooperation frameworks.
