CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H visits Kiirua Buuri and Mweru Umoja Irrigation Development projects in Meru County.
CS Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily K. Kariuki (Mrs), E.G.H visited Kiirua Buuri and Mweru Umoja Irrigation Development projects in Meru County. She was accompanied by CS, Ministry of Public Service, Gender and Youth Affairs Prof. Magret Kobi E. G. H and Governor of Meru County Hon Kiraitu Murungi E. G. H. They were received by the National Irrigation Authority Chairman Hon. Eng. Joshua Toro, CEO Gitonga Mugambi, among other government officers. They inspected the ongoing works and called upon the contractors to fast-track implementation of the projects to ensure timely completion for the beneficiaries to start utilizing the installed infrastructure for the intended purpose. They were pleased with the progress of the works in the projects and promised the residents more support towards achieving the Big 4 targets.
Kiirua Buuri Irrigation Development Project located in Buuri Constituency is targeting 1,250 acres to be used under irrigation. 2,500 farmers will benefit directly from this project once it’s completed by May 2021. Farmers will be able to grow Horticultural crops i.e. Potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, garden peas, and green maize with estimated average gross margins of KES 285,000.00 per acre per year.
Mweru Umoja Irrigation Development Project located in South Imenti Constituency is targeting 1, 000 acres to be used under irrigation. 1, 000 farmers will benefit directly from this project once it’s completed by March 2021. Farmers will be able to grow Bananas, tomatoes, French beans, Sweet potatoes, and Kales with estimated average gross margins of KES 255,000.00 per acre per year.
The development of irrigation projects plays a key role in achieving the Big 4 Agenda on Food and Nutrition Security.
